Newsbeuter and Google Reader lock-in

Zed Shaw likes newsbeuter, and rightly so: it’s indeed as fast to work with as mutt (unless you have a mutt with a hacked-in side-bar, that is). The complex multi-pane setup that Google Reader has doesn’t make sense: while I’m reading what you wrote, I don’t need a list of every other new post you wrote, let alone a list of everything everybody else just wrote. It’s ADD-inducing, really.

That’s just to say that I’m trying to switch completely to newsbeuter, with shared items appearing here on Tumblr. There’s one problem though: tracking friends’ (that’s you!) GR feeds via RSS, I miss out on commenting. And that, of course, makes me feel desperately lonely (insert appropriate smiley, I don’t know which one).

No deep insights here, but just thought I’d note that all the AGPL stuff and DataPortability things kind of miss the point in this case. The lock-in works not through the code, nor the data: it’s you.

PS: …and just to make sure you don’t miss this veiled statement of affection, I’ll go load up GR to share this - now please click here :)
